Stitch and Witch

Inspired by our beautiful sister Paula, we meet once a month to make hats and blankets for women with cancer. Together we WILL make a difference, one square at a time!

Location: Fairfax, Virginia
Members: 22
Latest Activity: Apr 24, 2011

This group is a place to share patterns, inspiration, ideas, encouragements and pictures of your projects.

We meet in person on the third Thursday of each month for fun, friendship and creativity.  Feel free to join our group even if you cant join us in person.

Our hope is to start creating for charities and developing some knit/crocthet/craft alongs.

Inspired by the Paula Project

When our dear Sister Paula was diagnosed with breast cancer we wanted to find a way to be with her and support her with her battle. We decided to make squares filled with love, healing, blessings, Reiki and good thoughts. These squares were knit and crocheted 9 x 9 ish. We then joined our efforts to make a blanket of friendship, love and healing.

Paula has inspired us, and given her permission to steal her name...giggles, to continue this work and create healing blankets for women in need.

Together we WILL make a difference!!!!!

We invite you to join with us on our quest to battle breast cancer one square at a time!!!

I keep forgetting about this group (blush)! I've not done a charity project yet since I'm trying to complete a set for my cousin's first grandbaby. I test patterns from time to time for Smooth Fox Creations. I got an email today from Donna about crocheting/knitting for 'Online Angels'. I'm going to dig out a pattern that will work up quickly and get it printed to start on!

I promise not to share all I learn, but the "what is it" tip was too interesting (and useful) not to pass on.

I belong to a yahoo sock knitters group.  Someone asked how to tell what a yarn is made of if there is no label.  I thought this reply interesting:
"To possibly determine fiber content, take a tiny piece of the yarn (if you can still get at one) and with some tweezers, and in a safe place, burn it....if it's all wool/alpaca (animal), it will burn with a smell (like
burnt hair), will have a "soft/med ash" and won't "sparkle" when burning (as if there was a synthetic in there). If the burned part/ash is a bit hard (like melted plastic) this might be from some nylon mixed in with the yarn.  But this doesn't account for maybe some bamboo being present: bamboo usually gives some sheen in the yarn and burns like cotton (soft).  If you take a bit more of the yarn and drop it into bleach, if it's wool, it will disappear/dissolve. I think this will apply to most "hair" type yarns.  I'm sure I've forgotten something. And I'm sure it's a good quality yarn if it came from a yarn shop."

Is this Stitch and Witch group in any way affiliated with the Stitch and Witch group on Ravelry?
